OPINION – It’s probably fair to say that English rugby can’t get much lower than it is right now – maybe with the exception of when the England team have to move out of their multi million pound training camp Pennyhill Park on Wednesday or when their campaign finally ends this coming Saturday evening.
But now that the smoke has well and truly cleared over Twickenham after England’s loss to the Wallabies on Saturday night, it is finally the time to conduct the post-mortem. While much has already been talked about it, it’s important to grasp the gravity of what actually occurred south west of London on Saturday.
We all know the result and while England were ultimately eliminated from their own Rugby World Cup after losing to the Wallabies, it’s fair to say that it was the game before and the manner that they lost it in that saw them so feebly bounced from their own tournament.
We outlined on Saturday what England would have to do to beat Australia and it’s fair to say that they couldn’t have got things more wrong and it’s most likely going to culminate in Stuart Lancaster and 6 or more current England players never being in England colours again after the conclusion of the tournament.
There are a number of points that Lancaster and his men got completely wrong on Saturday night and honestly, we could sit here all day long and talk about England’s inadequacies but here are four short and succinct points where the game was one and lost.
