Erratic Samoa account for USA

Samoa

LONDON – Samoa weren’t so much clinical as they were adequate, accounting for a steely USA team 25-16 at a sunny Brighton in Sunday’s Pool B game.

The Americans were, on all counts, good in many parts of the field as they didn’t shirk from their defensive duties and worked hard at the break down. Players like Samu Manoa, Chris Wyles, Chris Baumann and AJ MacGinty shone against the Pacific Islanders as America’s well drilled back line caused a few issues on defence for Samoa.

As for Samoa, they were up and down at times as they looked to struggle with cohesion and pushed the pass far too often. They also struggled with ball in hand making sloppy errors which meant that they never shut the door on a determined USA team.

Veteran winger Alesana Tuilagi got himself often and players like Jack Lam looked to lead from the front. Tim Nanai-Williams continued his class form from Super Rugby scoring Samoa’s first try off a class Tusi Pisi grubber kick.

Despite an upset never looking like being in the making, Samoa were unable to really impress themselves as their momentum was often stalled by poor handling errors.
