Injury blows hurt Scottish 6 Nation hopes

LONDON – Scotland’s hopes of ascending to 6 Nations glory have been dealt a significant blow with David Denton and Sean Maitland being ruled out of their first game against France.

Experienced back-rower Denton suffered a severe calf muscle injury in his side’s win over Bordeaux on the weekend and after being ruled out of Scotland’s first match against France, he may also be racing the clock to be fit for the Scots’ second 6 Nations match against Wales.

It is the same case for Kiwi-born utility back Sean Maitland who also suffered an injury playing for the Warriors in their European Champions Cup fixture over the weekend and will struggle to be fit in time for Scotland’s first home match of the season.

The timing couldn’t be worse for the duo who sought to lock down positions for the 6 Nations before really cementing their spots for the Rugby World Cup later this year. It is also bad news for coach Vern Cotter who would be looking to steer his team to a better tournament performance than their poor fifth placing in 2014.

Both players have returned to their clubs for treatment and will be considered for selection after Scotland’s first match against France in Paris in 10 days.
