LONDON – Aviva Premiership side Leicester Tigers have signed versatile Brumbies and Wallaby back Matt Toomua for the 2016/2017 Season.
The 25 year old has played 75 matches for the Brumbies as well as 23 times for the Green and Gold, making appearances in all but one of Australia’s World Cup matches.
Toomua is a very handy acquisition who can play at either pivot or centre, adding to the Tigers’ depth in the inside backs. He is also a staunch player in defence.
It’s unsure whether he’s going to Leicester Tigers for any period longer than a season as he still isn’t eligible to be picked as an overseas Wallaby as he hasn’t fulfilled the 60-test quota recently established by the ARU. And at 25 years of age, Toomua has a lot of rugby left in him.
Leicester’s Director of Rugby Richard Cockerill said that Toomua is the man they need in the backline.
“It is no secret we have been looking to sign a top-class player to add to our backline resources and Matt is certainly in that category,” he said.
“He is still a young man but he has already achieved such a lot in Super Rugby and played extensively in Test rugby for the Wallabies.
“We look forward to his arrival in the summer and to seeing him work with our back-line, and with Aaron and the coaching team. I’m sure his arrival will excite supporters too because he will be a top-class addition to the squad.”
