Morgan was the right decision by Gatland

Matthew Morgan

LONDON – Matthew Morgan was the right choice as the utility back in Wales’ Rugby World Cup squad according to former Welsh flyer Shane Williams.

Williams was over the moon for the 23 year old Morgan who was a surprise inclusion by Gatland in the Wales RWC squad announcement, instead opting to leave out an injured Gareth Anscombe who featured in Wales’ warm-up matches.

Speaking at a charity event in London on Wednesday, Williams suggested that the Bristol fly-half would bring a lot of fire power to the team, something that many have suggested Wales lack.

“I played alongside him and attacking wise hes one of the best I’ve played with”, he said.

“He’s got such great feet, he’s a gutsy player and enjoys taking guys on. And sometimes that’s the difference between winning and losing pivotal games”.

However, while Williams was pleased to see him involved in the side, he was unsure of the size of the role Morgan would play at the tournament which kicks off in just over a fortnight.

“It’s going to be very difficult for him to overtake guys like Williams and Halfpenny at the back but for games that you want tries scored in, there’s no better players to have on the field.”

As for the battle at the back, the 38 year old indicated that he’d like to see both Liam Williams and Leigh Halfpenny in the same team.

“Players like Leigh and Liam always put pressure on themselves to play well and be successful” he said.

“Leigh isn’t the kind of guy who lets complacency set in, he knows Liam is on his heels. Personally I’d love to see them in the same team with either one at winger and at fullback. They’re both great players that you want to see fit and playing for Wales because both of them are deadly.”
