New Zealand run over the top of a determined Argentina

LONDON – The All Blacks have opened their Rugby World Cup defence with a clinical 26-16 win over a dogged Argentina at Wembley in the final game of the weekend.

The Argentinians meant business the moment they stepped on the field with tears flowing in the anthem. And their passion was met with an equally passionate Haka by the All Blacks as the sides went toe to toe in the first 10 minutes of the match.

The Argentinians gave nothing away in defence and were hungry at the breakdown as they managed to slow All Black ball which made their rush defence in the backs effective. Despite being frequently penalised at the break down, the South Americans were tireless and made New Zealand make mistakes, especially after New Zealand were reduced to 13 men after two yellow cards to Conrad Smith and Richie McCaw respectively. With Argentina scoring the first try as well as going into the sheds at half time in front 13-12, the crowd could sense a Japan-like upset.

However Argentina never really got a look in in the second half after going up 16-12 through a penalty as they were completely dominated for the final half hour. A change in game plans and a change in personnel culminated in New Zealand looking almost untouchable in the final 30 minutes. Sonny Bill Williams was immense off the bench as he carried the ball very well and made space for men outside him.

The final quarter was almost a formality as Aaron Smith followed by Sam Cane crossed the line to see New Zealand home. While the All Blacks were pushed, they would have been pleased with their ability to change game plan as well as please with the quality of the Argentinians who showed how much of a positive impact being a part of the Rugby Championship has had on their rugby.
