North faces battle for Wales starting spot

North Ospreys

LONDON – George North knows he needs to make an impression for Wales during this RBS 6 Nations in order to keep himself from falling behind in the pecking order.

Earlier this week, Wales coach Warren Gatland hinted that he will likely stick with the same lineup he used in the Welsh’s final autumn international, a 12-6 win over South Africa, for their RBS 6 Nations opener against with England at the Millennium Stadium on February 6.

That puts North at risk for missing out, as he did not play against the Springboks due to concussion.

If the Northampton Saint wants to secure a spot as a winger, he has an uphill battle to fight over the next two months.

“Everyone knows the character that Gats is,” North told the Northampton Chronicle & Echo.

“He likes to put things on people, especially boys he thinks he can get more out of. I’ve come up on his radar and, myself included, it hasn’t been going as well in a Welsh jersey as in a club shirt.

“It’s up to me now to put my statement back and that’s the culture we’ve bred in Wales – that no man is safe in his jersey and you’re only as good as your last game. You’ve got to keep that jersey and the only way to do that is by playing well. It’s up to me to do something about it.”
