LONDON – Scotland Coach Vern Cotter has selected his 31-man Rugby World Cup squad with overseas-born duo Josh Strauss and John Hardie taking the place of back rower Blair Cowan who misses out.

South African-born Strauss qualifies to play for Scotland under the residency rule just before the start of the tournament while New Zealand-born Hardie qualifies through ancestry after making his debut last month.

The surprising omissions includes back rower Blair Cowan and John Barclay who have both played big roles in Scotland’s World Cup warm-up matches.

Scotland open their Pool B campaign against Japan in Gloucester on 23 September.
