Harlequins hold on

Harlequins London Irish

LONDON – The Harlequins have won at home for the first time in three months and ended a five-match losing streak in all competitions after registering a 26-20 win over London Irish at the Stoop.

Quins were in the middle of their worst losing streak since the 2010 season and they didn’t look completely in control as they clutched to a slender lead in the last five minutes. And despite not being totally convincing, they led from start to finish with pivot Nick Evans registering a solid performance with 16 points.

With the London Irish not winning at the Stoop since 2009, they couldn’t amend that poor record as they were outplayed from the get-go. The reality is that while a Fowlie try in the final 10 minutes set up an exciting end, they’ll be pleased with the bonus point.

A relieved Quins Coach Conor O’Shea was full of praise for his team in their steeliness to get through the rough period that they’ve endured.

“We’ve gone through a tough period, but I think some of the young lads are going to learn massively from it,” he said.

“It got tense for the players, as you would expect. We’ll learn from it. I’d love it to be beautiful all the time, but it never has been and never will be. But we will be much better for this.”
