Leinster Coach sacked

LONDON – Leinster coach Matt O’Connor has left Irish provincial team Leinster after a disappointing campaign saw Leinster fall short in the run for the playoffs in the Pro12 this season.

Forwards coach Leo Cullen will take temporary charge of the team until a full-time coach is appointed.

The split is said to be by “mutual agreement” despite leading the the 2012 Heineken Cup Champions to a Pro12 championship in 2014 as well as a European Champions Cup quarter final and semi final appearance.

The 44 year old Australia suggested that his fate was sealed by team’s poor results in the 2014/2015 season.

“We set high standards for ourselves and for many reasons we did not achieve those highs,” he said

“I am disappointed and frustrated with our form in the Pro12 this season. “However, the European journey that we took over two seasons, for a new group of coaches, players and staff, is one that we can be very proud of.”
